The Gold Coast Tweed District ladies have a new Singles Champion, Charlie Harkness from Broadbeach overcame the odds to defeated State skipper Sue McKenzie in a close hard fought final at Robina on Wednesday.

After sectional play on Monday and Knockout on Tuesday, the semi finals were down to Harkness, June Beverly, Gail Waitai and McKenzie.

The ladies played exceptional good bowls but the young Broadbeach star bowler Harkness overcame Beverly 25/14 from Tugun and team mates McKenzie won a long semi final match over Waitai

The Final was played with great sportsmanship between the two Broadbeach ladies, McKenzie the seasoned former twice Tweed Heads singles champion was a clear favourite but her younger opponent never gave in and won the day to become the youngest ever lady at 21 years old to win the District Singles.

The world of bowls never stops, especially at this time of year and the Gold Coast District Men and Ladies are hosts to the massive 2012 District Sides Championships on Wednesday.

Over 550 men plus 550 ladies will play from Wednesday till Saturday at various clubs, at the north end and ladies at the south end of the Coast.

In the Ladies 10 districts will play at Tweed Heads for 3 days, including the Gold Coast District B side and another 10 districts will play at South Tweed from Wednesday till Friday with the finals at Robina on Saturday...

The Mens district sides’ sectional rounds will be played from Wednesday to Friday at Musgrave Hill and Broadbeach with the Gold Coast A side at Musgrave and the B side at Broadbeach.

The play offs on Saturday will be hosted at five different clubs, Division 1 Musgrave Hill, Division 2 at Broadbeach, Division 3 at Tweed Heads, Division 4 at South Tweed and Division 5 at Robina.

The District Sides Championship is really only a warm up for the State Championships which start on Monday May 14 and also hosted by the Gold Coast District.

The bowls scene is never ending with bowls tournaments each week regardless of the District sides and 48 teams have entered the May Pairs at Tweed Heads on Monday and the Ladies Autumn May triples are filling fast for Monday May 14.

Helensvale’s 2 day $10,000 Invitational Mens Pairs commences also on Monday with top name bowlers competing in this prestige event on the Gold Coast. Mark Casey has teamed up with Aron Sherriff and Brett Wilkie is paired with newly crowned World Cup Champion Jeremy Henry.

Port City held their annual $16,500 Mens Classic Singles this week with a class field of top bowlers from Qld and NSW.

It was pleasing to see champion Gold Coast bowler Ray Glasser return to the green after battling a long illness and he won through his section – a might effort.

Jeremy Henry and Ian Tails Taylor won through to the semi finals and to lose to the eventual finalists Matt Gallop and Wayne Buckley from Sydney clubs. Gallop won the final 21/9.

The third PBA Challenge between PBA Australia and PBA New Zealand will take place again on Friday July 27 with the finals on Sunday July 29.

The Series stands at one all after PBA New Zealand snatch the final match when Raika Gregory defeated Steve Glasson in two straight sets on the Tweed Indoor Green.
